Houston ISD adopts charter school techniques
Teachers at seven secondary schools of the Houston Independent School District this fall are using successful strategies developed by charter schools to improve their ability to deliver instruction.
The two-year pilot program is currently active at Edison Fleming Grady Hartman McReynolds Pin Oak and Revere middle schools.
It is based on the 49 techniques espoused by veteran educator Doug Lemov in his book "Teach Like a Champion." Lemov will visit Houston later this month to provide additional training to participating schools on eight other techniques.
"What I think is so powerful about this program is that we have teacher leaders at every participating school setting up model classrooms and working with six or seven other teachers to provide feedback," said professional development academics program manager Pasha Goodman. "It's very cooperative and teacher-led. They're the ones pushing it forward."
Houston Independent School District is at 4400 W. 18th St, in Houston.
